From Foster Maytag to Foster Appliance
Our History
Foster Maytag first opened its doors in 1950, a fledgling business, operating on borrowed money with a total inventory of four Maytag washing machines and four Maytag gas ranges. Pat Foster was the owner and the sole employee, running the store during the days, making service calls and deliveries in the evenings. Through dedication and hard work combined with good quality, reliable products, the business thrived and grew.
Through the years, the business expanded, providing more choices in products and retail lines. The Iowa City area continued to grow too. New customers joined the ranks of those who appreciated the honest talk, courtesy, and personal service that became the trademarks of the store. Soon a bigger building became a necessity, and a few years later yet another expansion became necessary. Eventually the present location at 1920 South Gilbert Street became home.
In 2005, Pat Foster decided he was ready to enjoy retirement and a cabin on the Mississippi. The business changed hands and became Foster Appliance, with new owner Toby Hyde taking on the challenges of a new era. Toby grew up, went to school, and has worked most of his life in the Iowa City area. He knows the importance of family and community. Foster Appliance meets the needs of the Iowa City area community by keeping business locally owned. There is a commitment to customers who are also friends and neighbors. Toby is devoted to keeping the business vital, meeting the needs of a dynamic growing community, and providing a rewarding quality of life for his employees and family.
The flood of 2008 affected the entire community and Foster Appliance was no exception. The appliance inventory was evacuated and the business relocated temporarily to higher ground for the summer while repair and renovation was completed. During the months following the flood, many of those who needed help with flooded appliances found that Toby's belief in "giving back" to his hometown is not a lofty ideal but a personal commitment.
Because of the flood, Foster Appliance now has a great new look. Many a customer has done a "double take" when they see the remodeled and updated showroom. The changes are not limited to the building itself. New technology and new opportunities are essential to a thriving endeavor like Foster Appliance. And even as the business changes and moves forward, be assured, the focus of Foster Appliance remains the same as the day it opened, serving the community, providing Quality Products and Services for satisfied customers, "Because there really is a difference."
